Across the internet, everyone is talking about lithium ore, speculating on it, and scrambling to secure it. Today, however, we reveal a truth that defies common understanding: there is no genuine pure‑lithium ore on Earth.

 

Many people picture a scenario where a rock dug out from a mountain is lithium ore, ready for direct lithium smelting and battery production. This could not be further from the truth.

 

Lithium is a typical associated element.

Virtually no pure lithium ore exists in nature. Lithium elements are embedded within all kinds of rock formations. The so‑called “lithium ore” that fuels widespread speculation and fierce bidding is not elemental lithium itself, but lithium‑bearing ore.

 

This article focuses on lithium extraction from mica — a little‑known yet high‑yield source for most people.

 

Most regard mica as an ordinary rock for insulation materials and decorative panels with little economic value. Few know that lepidolite stands as a major hidden lithium resource. When mined, lepidolite is dominated by silicon, aluminum, potassium and dozens of other minerals. Lithium is merely a trace component mixed within the ore.

 

After raw lepidolite is mined, factories carry out over a dozen complex procedures: crushing, grinding, flotation, roasting, leaching, impurity removal, solvent extraction, concentration and crystallization. Through repeated screening and purification processes, trace lithium elements are separated and extracted from bulk ordinary ore. Only then can lithium carbonate and lithium hydroxide be produced for power batteries and energy‑storage batteries.

 

Besides lithium extraction from mica, there are two other mainstream lithium sources on the market:

First, spodumene‑based lithium extraction. It delivers the highest‑quality lithium feedstock and is the preferred option for vehicle manufacturers.

Second, lithium extraction from salt lakes. An emerging technique, lithium extraction from clay, has also emerged.

 

Lithium does not exist as a ready‑to‑use mineral deposit. It is a scarce metal industrially refined from various natural hosts. This explains why lithium costs remain persistently high, and why lithium resources appear widespread yet stay in tight supply. Raw ore is easy to obtain, yet purification poses major challenges. High‑purity industrial lithium relies on technology and production capacity, rather than mining alone.
